A Wind Technician's job duties

Inspect, diagnose, and repair wind turbines, identifying and correcting mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions to keep systems operating safely and efficiently.

Perform routine maintenance on turbine components, including lubrication, cleaning, and inspections to prevent wear and reduce downtime.

Access and work in elevated, confined areas by climbing turbine towers to reach nacelles and other components for maintenance and repair.

Test and troubleshoot complex turbine systems using diagnostic tools to evaluate electrical, mechanical, pitch, and control systems.

Support turbine performance and operations, including tracking equipment and parts, collecting and analyzing performance data, and assisting with turbine or wind farm construction when needed.

How to get started

To get started as a wind technician in Minnesota, begin by earning a one-year certificate or two-year Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in wind energy technology through a Minnesota State technical college. These programs provide hands-on training across the unique blend of electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems that keep a turbine running, while ensuring you are fully certified in specialized safety and high-altitude tower rescue. From there, you will transition directly onto a wind farm, where employers typically provide an additional 12 months of specialized on-the-job training to get you entirely comfortable working in tight spaces at heights up to 300 feet.
